![]() ![]() “To help with funding, we came up with the idea of Solace Reefs,” Darler says. Two local divers, Marcus Darler and Sean Webb, gained permission from the Crown Estate ( the monarchy owns the UK seabed) to obtain a square-kilometre site off the coast of Weymouth and Portland for a reef to help regenerate the local lobster population, as well as act as a dive site. The idea has also been adopted in Dorset, as part of a scheme to attract divers to the county. When complete, it will comprise 250,000 memorials covering more than 6.5 hectares (16 acres), making it one of the world’s largest human-made reefs. Hutslar says the artificial reef is home to 56 species of fish, as well as crabs, sea urchins, sponges and coral. “Building a reef costs money – lots of it,” says Jim Hutslar, its operations director. It is not the only such project in the ocean: the company behind the Neptune Memorial Reef, in Florida, says it “creates life after life” in the ocean and also provides memorials made of concrete and cremated remains, which cost from $1,295, to generate funding. Incorporating human ashes into artificial reefs could protect them, as well as highlighting the damage done to the ocean, says a marine biologist. “And we’re using memorialisation as the tool.” what our goal is,” says George Frankel, chief executive of Eternal Reefs. “We consider ourselves to be reef-builders. “Any impact disappears within days,” he says.Įternal Reefs says the money people such as Hock pay for reef balls – which cost between $3,000 and $7,500 (£2,200-£5,500) – helps fund more artificial reefs. Collins, whose specialism is artificial reefs, sees no problem with marine concrete and is involved in a UK memorial reef himself. “It is a designated bit of seabed which remains undisturbed,” he says. “When you have artificial reefs that contain human remains, imagine the consternation there would be if that area was trawled up,” he says.ĭr Ken Collins, of Southampton University’s National Oceanography Centre, agrees. Roberts says incorporating human ashes into artificial reefs could help shield them from destruction, as well as highlighting the damage we do to the ocean. “Corals and all sorts of animals grow better on structure,” he says. Murray Roberts, professor of marine biology at Edinburgh University’s school of geosciences, thinks it is a good idea. There was a real diversity of invertebrates covering the stones Marcus Darler, Solace Reefs ![]() The organisation has so far sunk close to 3,000 memorial reefs across about 25 sites, from Texas to New Jersey. At more than a metre high and two metres wide and weighing 250kg-1,800kg (550lb-4,000lb), the balls have a rough surface that allows marine plants and animals such as corals and algae to grow on them. Reefs are essential to protect shorelines and maintain marine ecosystems, as well as providing work for local communities and even helping scientists to produce new medicines.Įternal Reefs works with the Reef Ball Foundation and Reef Innovations, which constructs the balls. Most of the world’s reefs are at risk – from ocean warming and acidification, pollution and overfishing – according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. While the reef model still requires cremation, the idea is that the structures will help restore marine habitats by mimicking some characteristics of a coral reef. Today, the idea of an ocean burial chimes with a search for eco-friendly alternatives to traditional burial and cremation. And tales of fallen Viking heroes’ boats set ablaze have persisted in popular culture. In the South Pacific, bodies would be placed in canoes and pushed out to sea, while scattering ashes in the ocean has long been widely practised in Asia. The charity says it has seen the number of requests triple during the pandemic, mostly from people who love the sea – and the notion that in death they can help regenerate marine life.Ī desire to return to the ocean goes back millennia, with evidence of sea burial in ancient Egypt and Rome. One near Florida is now home to 56 species of fish, as well as crabs, sea urchins, sponges and coral. Reef balls can attract a host of marine life to largely barren seabed. ![]() ![]() ![]() planning and eecution of ARC LIGHT missions revealed they were excellent. Odysseus only managed to elude them by filling his sailors’ ears with wax. This free-loving musical odyssey is a direct reference to one of the most famous episodes of Odysseus’ epic journey, in which a band of sweetly singing monsters-the Sirens-almost manage to lure Odysseus and his men to untimely deaths. Ever the bedevilment of college professors and literature students alike, Joyce once remarked that he had “put in so many enigmas and puzzles that it will keep the professors busy for centuries arguing over what I meant.”Ģ. While a novel of such domestic leanings may not seem-at first glance-to have anything to do with The Odyssey, each of Ulysses’ 18 parts draw direct thematic connections between Odysseus’ epic journey and Leopold’s everyday one. This modernist novel follows Leopold Bloom of Dublin as he goes about the minutia of an ordinary day-June 16, 1904, to be exact. No discussion of artistic works inspired by The Odyssey can begin without mentioning James Joyce’s masterwork. In a recent interview about Father Comes Home From The Wars (Parts 1, 2 & 3), which plays the Mark Taper Forum through May 15, 2016, playwright Suzan-Lori Parks explained that while the play is not a retelling of The Odyssey, Homer’s tale nonetheless came to influence the work: Over 2,500 years after it was written (or spoken), The Odyssey continues to shape a sizable portion of Western arts culture-so much so that even the stories it has inspired are inspiring contemporary artists. Homer’s Odyssey, the story of Trojan War hero Odysseus’ journey from the battlefield to his home and family is one such masterpiece. I believe the same holds true for every industry. I talked about human being is getting paid fairly for their work. I didn’t say anything about actors being special. I didn’t read all that you wrote because you misunderstood me completely. That way when an actor becomes big they ar helping pay it back to actors who are in the place they were back in the day and it helps the money coming from the studios to be distributed in a fairer manner without a small percentage of actors taking almost all the money when they already make enough to ensure generational wealth The Networks/Services less, especially as all the streaming services are currently running on negative cashflows and Networks income is dropping). A better system would be something like having a fund that actors paid a percentage of their earnings into with the studios and networks/service agreeing to also pay an amount into (studios most likely at the current min rate for residuals based on SAG’s formula. It may work for people like her but for someone who may book a small one episode appearance in a show 1 or 2 times a year isn’t. If the likes of Ellen really cared about the ‘smaller’ actors they would actually be in favour of getting rid of residuals that if they were ever fit for purpose certainly aren’t now. Where as someone who appeared in a single episode of Facts of Life gets a $0.67 a year for that appearence. For example on SAG’s formula the Friends actors make around $10k per episode, so over $2.3million a year although its believed the principles worked out a deal with the studio that makes that closer to $20mill a year. The ones who were making bank from them were the ones who were paid tens or hundreds of thousands per episode (or for a movie perhaps millions) who really don’t need more. Now the idea of trying to provide a safety net for actors is fine but lets be honest here even before streaming most actors weren’t making a living wage from residuals. If a show or movie bombs the actors don’t lose anything, they have been paid but the studio does as they made the investment in that content that now may struggle to even break even. It’s the client that is taking the financial risk, they are spending money in the hope that that investment brings a return. The reason being that I’m not taking any financial risk by taking the work, I get paid for my time. Why exactly do you think actors are special? Like an Actor I’m a freelancer, when I do work for a client I don’t get or expect a cut of all future earnings that my work helps my client to make. The strikes are already affecting Grey’s Anatomy fans: The popular drama is nowhere to be found on ABC’s fall schedule, which is dominated by reality TV and game shows. They join writers’ guild the WGA, who went on strike back on May 1 after stalling in negotiations with Hollywood producer union AMPTP over many of the same issues. SAG-AFTRA officially went on strike on July 13, seeking an increase in streaming residuals along with other issues like AI and revenue sharing. (Some cast members of Orange Is the New Black voiced those complaints in a recent New Yorker story.) Grey’s Anatomy does stream on Netflix as well, but it should be noted: The streamer wouldn’t be paying those actors residuals those would come from the show’s producers like ABC Studios, who license Grey’s to Netflix. Pompeo’s comments refer to the heated negotiations surrounding the current SAG-AFTRA strike, with actors on Netflix shows claiming that they’re paid mere pennies in residuals, even if their show was a hit. ![]() ![]() ![]() There are many different types of touchless car wash soaps on the market.
